The city known as Fayetteville was originally founded as the town of Washington in 1828; however, the following year the courthouse was built and named Fayetteville Courthouse to avoid confusion with another town. Two of the town’s councilmen elected to name the town Fayetteville. In early November 1836, the town was incorporated, and in 1859 the city was chartered. In February 1862, during the Civil War, Fayetteville was occupied by a Union General and the next week, the Battle of Pea Ridge took place nearby. That December, Fayetteville housed injured soldiers of the Battle of Prairie Grove.
